How you can help Build

Without the generous support of hundreds of regular people just like you, Build House wouldn't be able to provide the quality care that makes us an example to the community, and creates a brighter future for some very special people. You don't have to be a millionaire to help: more than half of our donors give small amounts, $10 or $20. A small amount can make a big change!

Volunteer

We welcome volunteers of any age, ability or interest. Nursing or psychology students and high school students have found volunteering with us especially useful. Our volunteer program offers real work experience that can help on college applications and provide a springboard to nursing, occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, and special education degrees. We can always use help, especially on weekends: going shopping, movies, ball games, going on hikes, watching or marching in parades, gardening, cooking, eating out, all the stuff everyone else likes to do.

Build House also participates in the Board Fellows program. Students from the UC Berkeley School of Public Policy and Haas School of Business join our board and volunteer as non-voting members for a 5 month period. A former participant in this program now sits on our board and serves as Treasurer.

Master's in Social Work (MSW) students: contact us for internship opportunities and obtaining the hours needed for your credential. We have a board member who generously donates her time to be a supervisor for MSW candidates.

Former volunteers also include: two nurses, an MBA and an occupational therapist. Contact us for more information.

Donations

BUiLD welcomes the support of individuals and families in our community. Your gift or memorial donation of $25, $50, $100, $1,000, $5,000 or more helps to provide a quality program for the children and teens of the BUiLD house. BUiLD is a registered 501 (c)(3) organization (tax id #94-3284322), so your donations are tax-deductible.

By  Mail

If you would like to donate by mail, please send your check to the address listed at the bottom of the page (made out to Berkeley Youth Living with Disabilities). Feel free to indicate if the gift is on behalf of one of the residents.

Online

justgivelogoJust Give is our preferred organization for online donations. It's a great place to go in general for online donations, as they keep overhead pretty low to enable as much of your donation to go to the organization as they can.

You can read about BUiLD's mission, Board of Directors, financial reports, and more at our entry on their site however, they have not updated our entry in several years. Please use the pages on our site for updated information, including Board of Directors. Our most recent 990 can be downloaded in a pdf format by becoming a registered user. Use the create an account link on our front page near the sign in window.

The Power of the Purse

esriplogoIn addition to giving directly, our fellow Californians can also make contributions to BUiLD by way of their grocery and other purchases. BUiLD islisted with eScrip, an organization that collects donations when you purchase items from participating suppliers with credit and ATM cards you've registered with their website.

When you register, you're asked to identify which organizations you want to support. You can find us by searching for Group Name ("Berkeley Youth Living with Disabilities") or Group ID ("5704500"). The process takes only about 15 minutes and is supported by many local retailers.

Merchandise

Build House recently opened an online shop at cafepress.com. Every item you purchase there will contribute $5.00 to Build's operations.  There's lots of good products available already, and we'll try to add more soon.

Donate magazines, books, art supplies and occasionally, furniture

Please use the form on the contact page to let us know what you have and how you'd like to get it to us. We can always use magazines in good condition, crayons, markers, water-based poster paint and paper. We are a 501c3, so no matter how small the gift, you will be able to take a deduction for your generosity.
